Well folks I've said it so many times before and I'll say it again......if you want to catch Salmon you've got to put the effort in. But there's one more thing that may help you........this fly has been responsible for catching almost all my fly caught Salmon on the Dee: - I swear by this pattern and use it in red or orange. I tye it in all sizes, mostly on doubles but occasionally on trebles. Regardless of size, hook and colour I always use a lead wire underbody.....sometimes fine wire and sometimes medium. To my mind, this is the best fly on the Dee and would urge you all to give it a try. Chainman

That's a very nice fly Iwan, how about some dressing instructions so we can make a few clones. Any sparkle in the tail? I was into this sort of colour 2 years ago since then no success. Fred.

Can you give us details of the dressing. Some of it looks obvious but what acolours are the two tone body and what body material. Thanks.

I first used this style of fly about 25 years ago and I have to say that it's caught 90% of my Salmon since then. I don't think (though I don't actually know) that the pattern has any secret ingredients, it's just that I have complete confidence in it. I remember reading an article on it in the Trout and Salmon and if memory serves me correctly it was tyed on a treble..........I for some reason, decided it would be better an a double. As time progressed I added lead wire to it and found that the double hook shank gave the fly a slimmer profile than that of a treble. I've caught fish on all water levels with it and I have very small ones for low water and huge ones for high water. Anyway, I use red and orange versions and occasionally I use red and orange versions. The materials are simple: - Hackle - Orange or Red Cock Throat wing - Grey Squirrel (natural, red or orange) Wing - as throat wing Over Wing - Golden Pheasant Tippet (full feather folded) Tail - orange or red buck tail (don't use the straight ones) Body - rear orange or red Glo Brite and black floss for the front. Rib - holographic tinsel The hackle, over wing and the rear of the body are all fluorescent. I also use fluo tying thread or if not then the head is finished with Glo Brite. Does the fluo make a difference who knows?....but I think so Chainman P.S. I occasionally use light green Glo Brite for the rear of the rear body section To answer your question Fred....I only use sparkle in the tail on the larger high water versions.

Isn't that an Allys Shrimp? It is an Allys Shrimp variant, but as you know Dixie, if you went to a shop and purchased some Allys Shrimps they wouldn't look quite like this and they certainly wouldn't have lead in them - like everything else in life........the Devil's in the detail!! Chainman

Lost 2 of these flies yesterday. Will have to tie some more for next week. Did not have any luck with them on Wednesday at Chain or Taylors.Tried different sizes but the colours were the same as yours.
