I thought I'd start this thread to keep you informed of events on the river in these last few weeks of the Salmon season. These creatures, as you know, are so fickle and I find that it's always good to get a feel for what's happening before venturing out. It would also be useful if you could all contribute after a fishing session outlining river conditions, fish seen and of course fish caught or indeed lost!!! So come on all you non-posting members of this forum, feel free to join in and share with us your experiences....it's good to talk!! Anyway, I fished 'The Private Beat' today and was driven to distraction by the endless stream of tourists passing me on their way upstream . I saw no fewer than 22 fish and they were showing in all the usual spots which have consistently over the years told us that the 'Silver Ones' are on the move. I only saw 3 coloured fish.....the rest were all bars of silver and the majority were between 4 and 7ish lbs. I did see one fish in the high teens showing off its bright white underside and silver flanks. Unfortunately the fish weren't playing today.....it may have been due to the fact that the river rose a good 4 inches or so. The Alwen was running high, fairly coloured and full of leaves. As I left at around 5pm the Dee was still rising, however this small rise in level may well mean that there are a good few days ahead of us once everything settles.....who knows!!! If anyone doubts the numbers of fish in the river I can categorically say that it's full of fish. It's been a while since prospects for the end of the season have been so good ;D Happy Days Chainman

Hi Guys,
Fished private beat above Corwen today water high (806 Manley at 0630hrs) but running clear following yesterday's dirty flood. No fish seen in the morning and the water dropped probably 4 to 5 inches during the morning.
Fishing with short super fast tip and fly (not tube). Hooked a fish and promotely lost it as the fly line was caught round the reel handle. However, 4 or 5 casts later another fish on and after a good scrap a 14lb fish on the bank, clean fish.
A wee while later another fish on which wasn't too chuffed to be so, after leading me a merry dance and despite my fishing mate trying to knock it off with the net an even fresher 15lb beauty on the bank.
Around 15:30 I noticed the river seemed to be rising again but no colour added. During the afternoon we did start to see fish moving. Unfortunately had to leave at 17:30 but the other rod fished on until dark and the river was still running clear.
May have had a better day given that I arrived at the river at 06:30 if I could have fished from then till sunset instead of 09:30 to 17:30 but that's another story!!! ;D

What a strange day.......the water was perfect and so too were the weather conditions. Unfortunately I never came close to a take and only saw one all day. I spoke to 2 other anglers who had been on St. Davids and the Berwyn and seen nothing. However, I then spoke to a Syndicate member who had caught a fish below the Swimming Pool Bridge, another had a 15lber and lost one in Bonwm (above The Wharf). Not only did the latter have a fish he saw 17 others . On my return home I had a phone call to say that another angler caught a 14lber and a 15lber at the 'Private Beat'. Oh yes, I almost forgot.........I netted this fish for a very happy angler: - ....HEH HEH!!!! It weighed just on 25lbs and was duly returned. The lucky captor caught it just below 'The Run' on a size 12 Orange and Gold Shrimp. All of these fish were caught on a fly. So, if you're one of those doubting anglers who hasn't seen or caught any fish I hope this report gives you some confidence.......today I was fishless and to my amazement I only saw one fish. Others on the same Beat had a great day.........and that folks is Salmon fishing. Tomorrow however, is another day Chainman P.S. As if by magic one of the anglers in question posts on here.......well done Matt on your conquests today!!

Fished Chain and Taylors today.
River .730 on the Corwen gauge water running quite clear. 3 salmon showed in Chain and 2 just above the Chain top limit. Needless to say I did not get a tug. On to Taylors river started rising nothing seen no tugs so off home fishless.

Just a quick report before I hit the sack ready for tomorrow's assault on the river Today I was joined by none other than Mick Bates and as we looked over the Swimming Pool Bridge at 8.30am it looked promising, although I have to say that the rain was a niggling factor. In a nutshell.........we saw 12 fish, all of which were running. Mick had a couple of trout and I had a very fresh 1.5lb Sea Trout. The river rose steadily all day and was bordering on unfishable with a fly by 5pm. We spoke to a few anglers who were also fishless and reports varied greatly from 1 fish seen to another angler who had also spotted 12 fish travelling upstream. On a brighter note one angler had a fish of 11lb and one of 15lb on the 'Private Beat', the latter was an absolute bar of silver.....both fish were taken on a fly. There is no doubt that today's relative inactivity was caused by a rising river and I have a sneaking suspicion, weather permitting of course, that we'll see a few fish caught over the next few days . Well what a disappointment........I got to the river and it had dropped a good 3 inches and was running clear. "Game On" thought I - not a bloomin sausage!!!! I only saw 1 fish all day and another rod had seen only 3 when I left him at around 4pm. The wind was howling this afternoon and the leaves off the Willows were proving to be a nuisance but that said, I was waiting for 'that' pull on every cast....it didn't happen! As I write this I'm not aware of any fish caught today other than that one of Mick's report but I still have a couple of conversations to have this evening.....it may change! Finally, I have it on extremely good authority that there are good numbers of fish in the lower reaches Tight Lines Chainman

Over night release water and a heavy downpour last night meant that the river was the same level as yesterday this morning with a tinge of colour. However, by this afternoon it was dropping nicely and had cleared. I did say in my last report that I had a couple of conversations to have last night. Well the upshot was a 10lber caught below the Swimming Pool Bridge and a bar of silver of over 20lbs lost at the net in the 'Private Beat' . It seems that the fish came on today but again there were few showing. Other than the ones mentioned by Mick I'm aware of 4 other fish caught in the Corwen area. I was also told that a good number of fish had been seen at Erbistock weir yesterday........with this water they'll be with us shortly Unfortunately I'm not able to fish tomorrow but with this falling water I would say that the prospects are excellent.
