Apologies for not keeping you informed but I've been rather busy of late..........sorting the new Club rules!!! Tango I can now see light at the end of the tunnel - a few minor changes and I'm done !!! Anyway, the Gods never fail to let us down. Ever since I can remember (that's a long time ago ) they always deliver that final bit of water. From the age of four I've looked out of various windows and willed those first few raindrops to develop into the prolonged spells which would eventually raise the river just one last time before the season end. 'Caddy' and I were saying on Wednesday how a foot or so of water would make such a difference to our final week fortunes. Well guess what folks that foot or so of water has arrived ;D. As Mick said it was coloured yesterday but I saw several fish travelling in the space of an hour or so yesterday afternoon. The river had risen about 8 inches or so and the vast majority of the fish I saw were coloured. Today it was clearing all day although it was up about 3 inches. There was a steady trickle of fish and most of them were bars of silver. I was fishless when I left the water at 2.45pm, but a fellow rod had a fish and lost another in the space of 10 minutes or so this evening. He was fishing the water directly above the Wharf. The prospects are good.......it's rather cold but dry tonight, so in theory at least, the river will be perfect tomorrow. Tight Lines Chainman

Thanks for the update, good luck tomorrow.
I'll be there on Monday and hopefully on CADAC waters another day next week - if only work didn't get in the way quite so much! ;D

Well I can honestly say that today was the most enjoyable day's fishing that I've had for a long time. Why?.........it wasn't the fact that I caught more fish than I ever have in one outing.....because I didn't!!! For the record I had one fish and lost two but that was somehow immaterial. Yes it was great to finally land a fish having fished solidly for over 8 hours and yes it was superb that my fishing partner finally broke his duck for the season - he had 2 fish in 5 minutes which was just reward for his efforts this season. It wasn't even the fact that my floating line was repeatedly hitting the spot despite having 20ft of super fast sinking line attached to it!!! So what was it that made today such a special day?........a day which will remain in my memory for years to come. A day that I'll no doubt tell everyone about.....even those who don't want to listen!!! Folks, I kid you not.......today I saw 44 fish running through the Beat . They were a real mixed bag, small, large, coloured and clean and they were showing in slow water, fast water, shallow and deep water. I can only remember one occasion where I saw more fish in one day and that was a good number of years ago. I spoke to a pal of mine who was fishing above the Wharf and to my amazement he'd seen only the one fish by 2 o' clock. That made what I witnessed even more special......today I was blessed and it was a privileged experience to watch those magnificent creatures on the last leg of their very long journey. I'm unable to fish tomorrow due to family and work commitments but I'm sure that those venturing out will be rewarded.....the water level will be perfect and the Tourists will be travelling. Fished private beat today and to say the least the weather was interesting arrived just after dawn to perfect water (710 Manley). Sadly the wind wasn't quite so perfect as it was literally blowing a gale. Fortunately as it'd been blowing for a good while most of the leaves that could be blown into the river already had been and were winging their way to sea and thus they weren't too much of an issue. Water clear with a few fish moving this morning, a mix of coloured and bright clean fish. Another rod on the beat hooked and lost a fish after some acrobatics - on the fishes part not the rod! By lunchtime very few fish moving although did see one well coloured fish come clean out of the water that was a conservative 18 to 20lb. Finally, after much effort the superfast leader and heavy tube paid off by connecting to a coloured 12lb hen which the 'gillie' netted perfectly this time, not even a hit of him trying to knock it off this time! Thank you. She was duly returned to go on her way. Had to leave a hour before the close and it had been drizzling for a few hours but water still very good and wind dropping, I'm not sure of weather tomorrow but with such good water conditions and todays wind having blown most of the loose leaves away tomorrow/Wednesday should be perfect - although not for me as I'll be working. Good Luck

Well , four CADAC Salmon reported to me for yesterday . The largest , estimated at 18/20 lb was unhooked in the net without being taken from the water and swam off strongly after only one minute...well done to the angler and his stand in Ghillie . Also one coloured Sewin reported . I did make the effort on what might be my last chance this season , I was in Corwen at daybreak but still had to travel nearly to Bala before I found a piece of river that I wanted to fish that was not already occupied by an angler . Oh well . Did eventually manage to fish the Chain where a few fish were showing , saw nothing and caught nothing upriver apart from an unwanted Grayling on a Stoats tail....come back next week when I am fishing a 3wt . Rumours of a 25lb fish coming off the Crogan beats , apparently caught by 'Colin' , photographs apparently available BUT sadly not yet reported.....I do hope that this is not just a rumor and does eventually get reported as it would be , as far as I know , the largest CADAC fish this season / Four days to go . Well what can I say?........It's tough going - very tough. I have never seen so much release water in all my days . I find it incredibly difficult to accept why water is released in such volume at the very time of year that we least want to see it. On this height of water, at this time of year, we should be having a ball, but instead we have the very odd fish here and there. Folks, they're releasing water down the Tryweryn and Alwen and the black appearence of the river, along with that shiny surface inevitably results in well below average fortunes. I've fished periodically during the last 2 days and although I've seen plenty of fish I haven't come close to hooking one. However, I will no doubt return to the river for the final 3 days from Saturday to Monday. I read Mick's post with a wry smile.......it reminded me of days gone by. Getting up early to rush to the river only to find that someone had beaten me to it. It's great to see that anglers are making the effort to fish and that they're keen enough to get up at 'stupid o clock' in their quest to catch a tourist - long may it continue . Mick........a good fish of around 15lb was caught and returned on the Wharfe this morning. If you haven't had the call give me a ring and I'll furnish you with the details. Tomorrow will be a sad day in the history of the Club......Gordon's funeral. I urge all members, wherever you are, to spare a thought for his family and to say a prayer in honour of a great man who, along with several others, put this Club on the map. RIP Mr. Smith! Chainman

A sad day today but a very worthy send off for Gordon.......thanks to all who attended - I've never seen Gaffer and Caddy look so smart!!!!!
I haven't heard of any fish caught today but I'm sure Mick can cast some light on the fortunes of the day. What I do know is that they were still releasing water although it had dropped about an inch from yesterday when I looked this evening. I also know that the Friday rod on the Private Beat saw 38 fish today but despite fishing all day failed to catch a fish.
It's great to know that the fish have been running for weeks now which bodes well for the future. Good luck to one and all during these final 3 days.

A quick report before the game kicks off. Yesterday started with a trip from Shrewsbury to the Liverpool University vet hospital with my lab to sort an elbow issue - poor timing no picking up for her for a while. Got their only to be told it'll take 4 hrs - umm what to do but I do have a rod in the car!!! ;D 45min dash to Berwyn, only 2hrs to fish, meet a friendly face in the car park who kindly let me go through taylors first but no luck - except he then hooked a nice coloured cock behind me - well done. Time running out fish all way back down to car park - fly lands perfectly against far bank no mend on this one and as soon as the line began to move bang - here we go - after a short scrap a perfectly fresh 5lb grilse on the bank, photo and returned to do it's thing. Thanks to Sam for his photo skills. 45min dash back to Liverpool but what a worthwhile trip. Water was in very good condition some fish showing but not masses, a lot of leaves in the water and there's been a frost in Shropshire last night so expect more to drop over the weekend but most definately worth the trip still plenty of fish about and many of them fresh. Good luck. Mick I'll call you later, game to watch first - Good luck Wales - the final beckons!!!!

Well done again Matt........I remember a conversation we had as we waited for the light to fade one evening. You eluded to the fact that you should make more of your opportunities to grab a couple of hours on the river - this was a very worthwhile 'quick fish' outing I fished the Private Beat today and if I'm honest I did so half heartedly.......it's official, Iwan Lewis is pretty much fished out for this season. Depending on the water conditions I may venture out on Monday but as I saw my 12th fish today, whilst taking my waders off, I must admit to feeling that enough was enough. Whilst driving home I reflected on the masses of fish that I'd seen since the beginning of July. I'm led to believe that the Salmon numbers caught in the Chester Trap are slightly less than last year........I have to assume that the trap hasn't been as effective due to the higher water levels this year. Good luck to you all during the last 2 days. Chainman
