Cheers Iwan, well done this season. I'll be on the beat tomorrow. Need to get more quick sessions in next year plus more time on the sea trout! Quick sessions accounted for 8 of my 12 fish this year!!! One 'quickie' (heh heh) resulted in 3 fish one Monday morning in just under 2 hours!! I appreciate that it's far easier if, like me, you live close to the river but I would urge all anglers to consider grabbing the odd couple of hours when they can as opposed to mammoth all day sessions. I would always advocate that 4 x 2 hour sessions are far better than 1 x 8 hour session. I have a plan for next season which will allow the opportunist to decide whether or not it would be worth making a quick visit to the river. Tight Lines for tomorrow. Chainman

It also helps being on a good water that isn't hammered......ideally a junction pool... lol

Needless to say I didn't catch any salmon today, or indeed at all again this season. Although I did hook one on Chain Pool last Tuesday, but after playing it for 5 minutes, my leader snapped!! I wasn't going to go fishing today, as the water height was lower than last Friday, but still too high, A BIG THANK YOU TO THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY FOR MUCKING THING UP FOR US AT A TIME WHEN WE DON'T NEED EXTRA WATER FOR THE LAST 2 WEEKS OF THE SALMON SEASON!! I hope they have been inundated with calls from ANGRY anglers - they certainly deserves it. In the end I said sod it I'm going - you never know. And I'm really glad that I did. I started fishing on the top section of St Davids, as I thought that the lower end would be like Piccadilly Circus? After a good few casts, I stopped and had some lunch and looked downriver to where the big submerged rock is, and thought I could see a lot of salmon activity, so walked down there to see and there was nothing, so went back upstream to finish my lunch. After 5 minutes I could see more activity, which looked like salmon head and tailing near to the left bank, but it wasn't salmon - it was 2 otters and they were coming upstream. I took a couple of photos of them on the surface on a small digital camera I take out with me (when I remember) and waited for them to come nearer. I took a photo of one of them swimming around below me and then looked up to see the other on a big rock about 30 feet away from me, and took a few shots of that one. All the time they were calling (whistling) to each other ( I thought it sounded more like a bird call) and I kept my eyes glued to the one in front of me. This one went in and out of the water on to the rocks around me, and when it submerged I made my way quietly to the edge of the bank and waited. It ended up 6 feet below where I sat and I kept taking photos as it moved around below me!! I must have made a noise as it soon disappeared like a shot. Although I was fishless I wouldn't have missed this for anything, and hopefully you can see the photos that I took as attachments, though some are a bit out of focus as I had to take them quickly before the otters disappeared! It pays to just sit and keep very quiet, you never know what you might see! (Hopefully all the photos I've tried to attach will be viewable, if not I will re-post them) Attachments:

No fish for me today although I did get a nice wind tan! ;D
I did see 19 of the little devils on their travels many of which were fresh.
Look forward to the plan re: short sessions for those of us who live a bit further away. I for one would be keen to get more 'quicke' sessions in but (like many I suspect) I don't wish to risk a 2 1/2hr round trip to find the water a nice shade of brown.
Anyway thank you all for the regular updates, especially Iwan and also Mick's catch updates.

Forgot to say nice otter pic's, you're right of course it's not all about catching fish (although it does help!). We get the privilage to see so much of the countries wildlife the vast majority of the population will never encounter

Lovely Otter pics but that is a fish being eaten in the first one isn't it? They are also above the ex council waters. As for the fishing well my back only lets me do about 2 hours at a time so that has been my formula for me this year. Now to start thinking tactics and new gear for next year. Happy times even though I only hooked and landed one fish. It did taste nice though.

Well thats the end of my first full season after the salmon, for the past two seasons i only fished a total of nine times for them, my casting was not good to put it mildly but i got by. i also lost three salmon one i estimated at well over 20lb.
This season had a couple of casting lessons and my casting improved greatly with this i was now convinced it was only a matter of time before i got one. Guess what, not a touch but i have enjoyed every minute of trying and can't wait for the season to get under way again.
Thanks to everyone who helped me and gave me info on pools etc. Thanks to Iwan for starting this board its been really informative.
Watch out Grayling here i come. Barry

I have been looking at Chris' entry on the 17th . Whilst very much understanding Chris' comments....it must be great to fish really good waters and be first down the pool and have that good water to yourself or with one other all day. I would love to be in that position but have to fight it out with everyone else . However I am pleased to report that one CADAC member caught 8 CADAC Salmon this season , mainly on the fly . This member was followed closely by another member who caught 7 CADAC Salmon , all on the fly . Both men are very experienced and keen anglers but it does show what can be done if you get out of bed very early , explore our waters and fish with skill and perseverance . Tight Lines....and God Bless You All.....Mick I also saw Chris's comment and chose to ignore it. However, a few facts may be in order. The ratio of anglers to fish caught is almost identical on both sets of waters. As for the "hammered waters" comment, might I suggest that it takes a great deal more than sexy loops and half a dozen outings to be a successful Salmon angler - as you quite rightly say Mick perseverance is a key factor. There are several people who caught 5 or so fish off CADAC waters this season which is a great deal more than some of the rods on the Junction. I fished Taylors for Salmon 3 times this year and got 1 fish.....not a bad ratio for a 'hammered water'. I've no doubt that Chris will catch huge numbers of fish on the Ribble next year. Oh and well done to Dave and Jimmy on their catches this year....my God, just imagine how many they'd catch if they fished the Junction!!!!!

Anyway.....the 'final month' and season came to an end. It was a somewhat disappointing end due to the water conditions but all in all it was a reasonable season and I have to say that it's been a long time since I saw as many fish.
I made a conscious decision this year that the forum would be used to keep members informed of events. I hope Mick's excellent weekly reports, this thread and others have helped those members who chose to read them (thanks Mick).
I am aware that there are those who disagree with this information being displayed on here and I can only assume it's for fear that they'll catch less fish as a result. I feel that it is our duty to inform all paying anglers of the fortunes encountered on the Club waters. Nothing would make me happier knowing that anglers have been enthused by the information and even better if they've caught a fish as a result of what they've read.
Thanks to all who have posted on this thread and it won't be long before 'the final month' 2012 will be upon us.

Some people seem to have lost their sense of humour ;D, being close to the water and having access to a private beat helps no matter what you may say.
But, being close to the water that you fish is the important one, for me 90 minutes to get to the river is too much hence me joining a club on the Ribble, where I can be fishing in 45 minutes from leaving home, this is I believe the most important factor, Iwan\ successful angler can be through a pool before I have even arrived in Wales, also being closer means you get faster access to the ideal conditions.
The less said about the last 2 weeks and the compensation water the better, spoiled what should have been a good time for all

Chris
The issue of private against association water is a much debated topic, one which I'm not going to spend any more time on.
However, what I would say to you is that St. David's water brought far more fish per angler than the 'Timeshare' Beat opposite.....but as I said I don't want to dwell on this.
What I take great exception to is that you, as a Club member, saw fit to use the words "water that isn't hammered" on the Club Forum. They are very ill-chosen words and are quite frankly derogatory to all other members who fish the waters.
You are of course entitled to your opinion, but some thought for all who work hard on behalf of the Club and its well being may have been more appropriate.
This is my final word on this matter on the forum but I'm more than happy to discuss it with you by telephone should you wish.

Iwan,
they are only ill chosen if they are not true, I have had days when arriving at the river I have spent more time in the car trying to find water to fish than I have actual fishing, now this may not be hammered, but, private and syndicate water gets less traffic than club water, and club water gets less traffic than day ticket water, that is just the way it is, not a complaint just my feelings, hence me joining the Ribble club I have, and it was also one of the reasons I left Llangollen and joined Corwen a few years ago, less traffic and better fishing. After all I need the space for the sexy loops that are so important to me
