Only one other interesting report recieved this week but not about migratory fish . A member was playing a brown trout accidently hooked on his robust Salmon Worming gear when the trout was seized by a large Otter . Apparently the Otter was spitting and hissing loudly during the contest . Not sure who won this (I guess not the unfortunate Trout) as I was awkwardly parked on the road by the Chain whilst the conversation was taking place and felt I had to leave before something ran into me . I have also had a very good siting of a Hobby recently whilst fishing CADAC waters , there's more to fishing than just catching fish . Heh heh....Happy Days!!! It's great to hear of such tales and reminds me of an altercation I had with an otter whilst Sea Trout fishing Things are certainly quiet out there at the moment.....having said that the number of anglers on the river is next to nothing. We need rain Mick!!!! Chainman

Catch Report Saturday 30th July until Saturday 6th August . Despite low water one angler managed a beauty this week . A 13lb Hen Fish , bright as a button , off St. Davids ....I was fortunate to see (but sadly not catch this fish).....a lovely deep Hen fish . Keep trying and pray for rain . Tight Lines......Mick.

CADAC catch report for the period Sat 6th Aug until 4.45 pm on Sat 13th Aug . Only one migratory fish reported to me that being a Sea Trout of 1.5lbs from Gwnodl Bach . The fish was apparently showing sighs of having been in the river for some months and was returned to breed . We have had some water over the past days and so hopefully things might improve in the coming week . I fished yesterday only to have my enjoyment spoiled by a canoist who apologised to me and then paddled right through the area that I was fishing . I believe that the shape of a canoe is so similar to that of a Salmons' main maritime predators ie seals , dolphin and porpoise that it can terrify migratory fish in a shallow river like the Dee .

Mick
Many years ago I was fishing the A'an (spelled Avon) in Scotland, the principal spawning tributary of the Spey. It's fast, clear and maybe a bit smaller than the Dee up at LLanderfel. In normal conditions so clear that 8 ft of water looks colour of a glass of lager.
Fished one pool, then was going to cross river at tail of pool to go down and fish run below from the other side. Got about 30% across river and saw 3 canoeists coming down, who passed by and wished me "Good Day". Within 30 seconds they were 300 yards down the white water and heading to the next pool. Suddenly I was surrounded by Salmon, perhaps 8 - 10 of them, swimming up gently like a pod of fish often do when the water is the right height to encourage them to run.
Doubtless the fish were disturbed and moved from their lies in the run beneath, but they weren't in a panic, I've seen salmon that I've spooked and they tear about at speed.
My conclusion is that salmon may be disturbed (and perhaps moved) by a canoe, but I don't think they are badly scared. Not a lot of help if you are fishing Chain or Island Run, for instance, and a canoe moves them up into the Syndicate water above, but give them 30 minutes to settle and I'd be not unhappy to fish again through the lie with a degree of confidence.

Weekly Catch Report ; well what a difference a week and spot of rain have made , eight fish reported for the week . 2 off St. Davids' , 3 off the Chain , 1 off Crogen , 1 off The Run and one off Lynn Du (please excuse my Welsh but that deep bit we have) . Well done all the successful anglers . Three this week on the Fly but by and large the Year of The Worm is upon us (I've now actually bought some worms myself , not sure what to do with them but can always feed to my chickens when I get bored with it). Keep the Faith.....Mick

Hi Chainman , well done is that double figures yet ? er would that be a CADAC fish ? or off other waters ? Not double figures......I need another 3 to get to those heady heights!!!! It would have been a CADAC fish at some point but unfortunately it had gone upstream of Corwen Chainman

Weekly migratory fish report 03/09/11 ; five fish reported to me this week , four recently caught and one caught on 14th July by a new member who is now up to date with fish reporting rules...thanks for the late report it was a fish that I knew nothing about . 14th July fish St. Davids' . This week one from Signal . one from Taylors' , one from Tyfos and one from Gwnodl Bach (again sorry for my Welsh) . Pleased to say that a stealthy approach , a long leader and a tiny fly paid dividends for me and I had to report a fish to myself , quite fun really . The Grilse seem to have arrived , prior to this mainly two winter fish . It is supposed to rain heavily today in Wales , let us hope that they have it right this time....not many weeks left . Pray for water . Tight Lines.....Mick
